What’s the Difference between Home Staging and Interior Decorating?
Grand Millennial Living Room
We get this question a lot, and it’s a great one. Home staging and interior decorating can look similar from the outside — both involve furniture, color, and the art of making a space feel just right. But they serve completely different purposes.
Home staging is about selling.
When we stage a property, our target audience isn’t a homeowner — it’s a buyer. By making sure we are doing all we can to meet the strategic vision for the property, every decision we make is designed to help a home photograph beautifully, show well in person, and appeal to the broadest possible pool of qualified buyers in the Greater Boston market. We’re creating an experience that allows someone to walk in and immediately picture themselves living there. That means strategic furniture placement and furnished spaces that feel both aspirational and accessible. At Red Door, we stage an average of $220 million in Greater Boston real estate each year, and after nearly two decades we know exactly what makes a buyer stop scrolling and book a showing.
Interior decorating is about you.
When we work with clients on their interiors, the whole equation flips. Now our job is to draw out your personality, your taste, and your vision — and help you bring it to life in the space where you actually live. We’re not designing for a hypothetical buyer. We’re designing for you.
Our interior decorating services include renovation consultation, design board creation, room redesign using furniture you already own, paint color selection, art placement, and window treatments. We come in as collaborators and guides, and we love nothing more than a client who calls us six months later to say they’ve completely taken ownership of their space.
Can you need both?
Yes — and it happens more than you might think. We’ve worked with homeowners who hired us to decorate their home, then years later called us back to stage it for sale. We’ve also worked with buyers who purchased a property we had staged, fell in love with the look, and hired us to help them create something similar in their own style.
The skills overlap, but the mindset is entirely different — and having a firm that truly understands both means you’re in good hands at every stage of your home’s story.
Not sure which one you need? Reach out to us and we’ll point you in the right direction. There’s no pressure — just an honest conversation about what makes sense for your situation.
